I’m documenting key information here, and will turn this into a complete post later on, once the matter is fully wrapped and resolved.
Essential facts:
- What: Twice my car was vandalized (keyed) on the right hand side. about 1 metre long for each scratch, the first covered the back door and back bumper area. 2nd covered the same back door.
- Car description: Toyota Camry sedan, year 2000, light electric blue colour.
- Location: Robertson Lane, close to corner with Fitzroy Street, Kirribilli (picture of location below)
- Times:
I discovered the first scratch at 9:34am, Monday 17th of June, 2024. It was parked there overnight.
I discovered the second scratch at 5:02pm, Friday the 28th of June, 2024. It had been parked there for ~3 hours, so it likely happened between midday and 5:00pm that day. - Contact: If you have relevant information: 0414519102 // cefthurston@gmail.com

The full story…
Recently, something strange happened: my car got keyed.
What’s even stranger is this happened twice, 11 days apart.
Now, I love my car, and it gives me a great source of joy. Why? Is it fancy, fast, or particularly trendy? No, it is common, slow, and old.
My car is a year 2000, third-hand Toyota Camry, in the colour of electric blue. And I absolutely love it. We call it “Uncle Frank” – a name me and the girlfriend christened it as a name after our wonderful mechanic, Frank.
The girlfriend learned to drive in it, and passed her license in it. Most recently we tested out the CD and Cassette player in it, and it worked like a charm. Sure, it might skip a bit if we hit a pothole, but cruising the streets to the sounds of “Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer has given me a lot of joy.
Turns out, someone ‘can touch this’ when it comes to Uncle Frank.
On Monday, the 17th of June, 2024 at 9:34am I was going to get the car and I noticed it had a scratch on it’s right hand side. I took a photo. It was parked in Robertson Lane, Kirribilli, just off of Fitzroy Street, where we live. It’s literally the lane behind the building we live in.
At first I was wondering if it was just a scratch from parking and we hadn’t noticed.
On Friday, the 28th of June, 2024 at 5:02pm I saw another scratch, just beneath the first, also while parked in the same lane. Both times, no other cars had been scratched.
I’ve racked my brain trying to figure out who or why this was happening. Crazy ex? Nope, or at least it’s been 4 years since I had an ex, so unless they’re unusually patient, it seems unlikely.
Did I cut someone off in traffic? Not tip a local cafe enough? Do something else?
I have no bumper stickers on the car, and it’s hard for me to imagine anyone seeing an old Toyota Camry as a wealthy person’s car who they’d like to take down a notch or two.
All I can think is someone views that spot as “theirs” and that I’m parking in “their” spot. Maybe it’s a nearby parker who thinks my old car doesn’t deserve to take “their” spot? Maybe it’s a local kid, or older person who thinks it’s an easy target, and unlikely to have cameras to detect them scratching the car.
It’s bizarre but today, some potential progress…
